Elaine CareyElaine Carey is associate professor and chair of the History Department at St. John’s University in Queens, New York, and the Lloyd Sealy Research Fellow at John Jay College of Criminal Justice. She is the author of Plaza of Sacrifices: Gender, Power, and Terror in 1968 Mexico (New Mexico, 2005), co-editor with Andrae Marak of Smugglers, Brothels, and Twine: Historical Perspectives on Contraband and Vice in North America's Borderlands (Arizona, 2011), and editor of the forthcoming textbook Protests in the Streets: 1968 across the Globe (Pearson). From 2010 to 2012, she worked with her former student Raymond Pun, a librarian at the NYPL, in creating a program to introduce undergraduate students to historical research methods; the Teagle Foundation and the National History Center funded the project. Her interest in the Tuning Project derives from her ongoing collaboration with historical practitioners, whether public historians, librarians, and archivists, to promote student research and the creation of assessment tools to measure students’ learning and success.
