The royal abbey of Saint-Denis was the burial site for French kings and their families. Many of these tombs were vandalized after the French Revolution, and this elegant head originally rested upon a stone pillow as part of a tomb effigy. Her braided hair is arranged in a style fashionable at the medieval French court.
