Project Summary

This project proposes to engage teachers and students to learn about the causes and consequences of modern imperialism through the use of primary sources. Most of these sources, such as excerpts from government documents and political treatises, are quite conventional yet essential to any comprehension of this issue. Other materials are less commonly utilized in such an inquiry but nonetheless are equally necessary for a more complete understanding of imperialism and industrial nations-documentation such as political cartoons and music from the time period. The instructor can select the source materials deemed most appropriate to a discussion of the topic in general, while the archive of Chinese sources allows for an in-depth case study of the Middle Kingdom.
