Resources for History Departments

As the primary professional association for historians in the United States, the AHA serves the broad professional needs of the discipline. For history departments, particularly those at four-year colleges and universities, we offer a range of services and information. The AHA is the only disciplinary society in the field that provides extensive comparative data on departments. Each year the AHA reports on the latest trends in salaries, enrollments, and employment trends for departments at all levels. And the AHA continues to serve as the primary clearinghouse for job listings in the field.

We also try to provide resources you can use in advising students in your program. For the history major, we offer Careers for History Majors, a short guide to some of the job prospects for anyone wondering what they can do with a BA in the field. For those interested in continuing their studies further and entering the ranks of professional historians, we offer Careers for Students of History, co-sponsored with the National Council on Public History, and authored by faculty and students in the Public History Program at the University of South Carolina.

We welcome advice and suggestions on other areas of information we might include, or improvements we could make to this site.
