The experiences of women, peasants, and urban working people of the conquered regions have recently been given voice through the use of oral accounts and other nontraditional sources. These studies have helped shift the focus from Eurocentric political, diplomatic, and economic interpretations to a more global perspective.
Michael Adas is Abraham Voorhees Professor of History at Rutgers University at New Brunswick. He is the editor of the "Essays on Global and Comparative History" for the AHA.
