The American Historical Association is pleased to announce the fourth in a series of workshops that the Association has been conducting for department chairs, directors of graduate studies, and others interested in various aspects of graduate education.

Directors of graduate education in particular, and others interested in graduate education are invited to participate in the summer 2006 workshop, which will focus on the many crucial and complex challenges involved in ensuring successful and smooth progress of graduate students toward a degree.

The interactive workshop sessions will include brief presentations by faculty involved in MA and PhD programs. Discussion by attendees at the workshop following the presentations will be a key feature (to which substantial time will be allotted).

The workshop will be held at the Holiday Inn Rosslyn at Key Bridge in Rosslyn, Virginia, just across the Potomac from Georgetown in Washington, D.C. The hotel is three miles away from the Ronald Reagan National Airport and one block from the Rosslyn Metro Station. The Kennedy Center, the Smithsonian Museums, and Arlington National Cemetery are a short distance away. Free parking is available at the hotel.

Registration and Accommodations

Registration for the workshop is now open. The registration fee of $200 will include a reception, full breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and two coffee breaks. Please note that the registration deadline is July 1, 2006.

Rooms are available at the Holiday Inn Rosslyn at Key Bridge in Rosslyn, Virginia. The number of rooms is limited, however, and reservations must be made (directly with the hotel) as early as possible to receive the special, discounted rate of $119 plus tax. The program will begin on Thursday, August 3, 2006, with a reception that will be held from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., and dinner (during which George Walker of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching will initiate discussion on the topic “Effecting Change in Graduate Education”) from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Speakers at subsequent sessions include Tyler Anbinder (George Washington Univ.), Daniel Cohen (George Mason Univ.), Eve Levin (Univ. of Kansas), Emmet McLaughlin (Villanova Univ.), Brooks Simpson (Arizona State Univ.), Brad Austin (Salem State Univ.), and Laura Croghan Kamoie (U.S. Naval Academy).
