Program Description

The Department of History at the University of Toronto offers a broadly diversified program of graduate studies leading to the M.A. and Ph.D. degrees. Instruction is offered in all major areas of historical scholarship by a graduate faculty of approximately seventy members. Courses are offered in the history of Canada; the United States; Medieval, Early Modern and Modern Europe and Britain; Eastern Europe; Russia; Latin America; Africa; South Asia; East Asia; Southeast Asia; International Relations; History of Medicine, and Women's History.

Special Programs or Resources

The University of Toronto also offers rich resources outside the department to support the study of history. The Robarts Research Library in the Humanities and Social Sciences, unrivaled in Canada and among the leading university libraries in North America, provides a foundation for a wide range of study, and that broad-based resource is supported by several specialized collections elsewhere in the University. A number of centres and research institutes further extend the range and depth of graduate study possible at the University of Toronto. The Centre for Medieval Studies and the Pontifical Institute have particularly strong resources for European and British medieval history. The Institute for the History and Philosophy of Science and Technology, the Centre of Criminology, the Institute for Urban and Community Studies, the Munk School for Global Affairs, and the Centre for European, Russian and Eurasian Studies afford additional opportunities for interdepartmental work. As well, collaborative programs are available in Asia-Pacific Studies, Book History and Print Culture, Editing Medieval Texts, Ethnic and Pluralism Studies, International Relations, Jewish Studies, South Asian Studies and Women's Studies. The History Department has a special strength in gender history, medieval history, transnational history, colonialism, the Americas, Europe and Russia.

Financial Aid

The Department of History provides a guaranteed funding package for all PhD students from years 1 through 5. The University of Toronto funding package consists of a fellowship, a TAship and a research assistantship, which students hold concurrently.

Degree Requirements

There are five main requirements in the PhD program in History: fulfillment of the residence requirement; successful completion of four half-year courses; successful completion of the comprehensive examinations in three fields of history by April of the student's second year; fulfillment of language requirements that vary with the student's major area of study; and the writing and successful defense of a dissertation. The Department also offers a direct-entry PhD program for students entering with a bachelor’s degree. It has the same requirements as above except that students must complete nine half-year courses and comprehensive examinations are completed in the student’s third year.
