Financial Aid
The Department of History offers financial assistance in the form of Teaching Assistantships and Teaching Fellowships. Teaching Assistants work in a variety of capacities under the supervision of a faculty member, while Teaching Fellows teach their own class. Both positions include a tuition benefit (the department pays your tuition), a stipend for the academic year and the option to purchase health insurance at a discounted rate.
Degree Requirements
Candidates for the Ph.D. degree ordinarily must complete no fewer than 3 full years (6 semesters) of approved graduate work (i.e., courses numbered 5000 and above), inclusive of work for the master's degree. Advanced proficiency in one modern foreign language, and standard proficiency in a second modern foreign language, are required of all Ph.D. candidates in the Department of History. Qualifying Examinations for Ph.D. students in history are in two parts: Written examinations for admission to candidacy are held both in the major and minor fields. The examination in the major field will not exceed 8 hours in length; the examination in the minor fields will not exceed 4 hours in length altogether (i.e., two hours in each minor field). All minor and major field examinations are to be administered at a time and place determined by the committee chair. The exams are constructed and evaluated by the student's supervisory committee and will reflect the breadth and complexity of the entire field. The graduate director shall inform each student in writing of the results of the examinations. An oral examination of approximately 2 hours will be conducted by the student's supervisory committee soon after successful completion of all written examinations. The oral examination shall be chaired by the supervisory committee chair and will cover the major and minor fields.
