Program Description

The provides virtually all graduate instruction in seminars, which typically contain no more than 10 students. The Ph.D. requires 30 credit hours of course work, excluding dissertation hours, beyond the M.A. and candidates must complete on year in residence as a full-time student. Students must demonstrate reading knowledge of at least one modern foreign language.

Special Programs or Resources

The TCU Library holds the papers of Amon Carter, a Fort Worth businessman who was involved in newspapers, radio, television, and aviation and whose art collection and philanthropy established Fort Worth's Amon Carter Museum. TCU also holds the papers of Jim Wright, former Speaker of the House of Representatives. The National Archives and Records Administration, Southwest Region, is in Fort Worth, and the Amon Carter Museum and For Worth Public Library have collections valuable for research in local, state, and American West history.

Financial Aid

The department offers one fellowship each year to an incoming student and has more than 20 teaching assistantships, which include stipend and tuition credits for full-time study. Sometimes assistance in the form of tuition credits only is available. The department awards two dissertation fellowships each year.

Degree Requirements

Students must complete 30 credit hours of course work, excluding dissertations hours, beyond the M.A., demonstrate reading knowledge of at least one modern foreign language, pass written and oral qualifying exams, and write and defend a dissertation.
