Program Description
In conformity with policy established by the Ohio Board of Regents, the Department of History offers doctoral dissertation fields only in "contemporary history," defined as the period since the end of World War I and in no case to encompass a topic set primarily before 1918.
Special Programs or Resources
Closely associated with the Department of History is the Contemporary History Institute (CHI), which offers a unique multidisciplinary curriculum that complements the Department of History's programs. The CHI's focus is post-1945 history and includes among its associates more than a dozen history faculty who have written numerous books and journal articles on various aspects of contemporary history as well as faculty associates from the Departments of Economics and Political Science and the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism.
Financial Aid
The department offers doctoral students teaching assistantships which pay a yearly stipend of $15,500 plus a waiver of tuition. Doctoral students may also qualify for a CHI fellowship of $14,200 plus a tuition waiver. Doctoral students can usually expect financial aid for four academic years (12 quarters.)
Degree Requirements
Twenty-one quarter courses, four field qualifying examinations, an oral qualifying examination, and a dissertation.
