Program Description
The joint PhD between North Dakota State University and the University of North Dakota combines their resources and faculty to offer a comprehensive degree in North American and Western European history with particular strengths in Great Plains history and rural history.
Special Programs or Resources
Important regional archives are located in the North Dakota Institute for Regional Studies and the Germans from Russia Heritage Collection at NDSU and in the Elwyn B. Robinson Department of Special Collections at UND.
Financial Aid
The NDSU History Department has two doctoral assistantships of $12,000 plus tuition. The Germans from Russia Heritage Collection also funds a research assistantship.
Degree Requirements
Each student must complete 90 credits beyond the bachelor's degree.
Each student must write three comprehensive exams, one in the major field, and one in each of two minor fields.
Each student must complete an oral examination based on the written comprehensive exams.
