Program Description

The history graduate program at UNM offers the Masters and Doctoral Degrees, and has a strong record of placing graduates in positions in academia, in the public history arena, and in other professional venues. The department's nationally recognized strengths in the history of Latin America and the American West complement its strengths in the history of the United States and of medieval and modern Europe. Working closely with faculty members and fellow graduate students, MA and PhD students develop the background, skills, and insights to make significant contributions to the realm of historical scholarship. UNM graduate students are also able to gain valuable teaching experience, as well as financial support, from a generous array of classroom assistantships; they have also been successful in obtaining external grants for research and other scholarly activities. Doctoral students concentrate in two primary fields of history and one secondary field before undertaking dissertation research.

Special Programs or Resources

Special resources for graduate study in history ay UNM include the Latin American and Iberian Institute, the Center for Southwest Research, the Medieval Studies Institute, and local archival resources in the history of New Mexico, the U.S. Southwest, and the nuclear dimensions of the Cold War.

Financial Aid

Graduate teaching assistantships, which provide opportunities for teaching and research experience, are available on a competitive basis; multi-year awards include tuition credits, benefits, and graduate stipend. Dissertation fellowships, research fellowships, and advanced teaching opportunities are also available in the latter stages of the programs.

Degree Requirements

The PhD program requires at least 48 credit hours of graduate level coursework, a written and oral PhD examination, and the dissertation (which includes at least 18 dissertation credit hours).
