Program Description

Our goal is to engage graduate students and faculty in individual and collective interdisciplinary investigations of historical thought, and in research on the historical experiences of humanity in different times and places. We expect our graduates to become outstanding teachers at universities and colleges throughout the world, and to make innovative and enlightening contributions to the study of history, whether as teachers, researchers, public historians, or independent scholars.

Special Programs or Resources

The University of Michigan's Library system is consistently ranked as one of the top ten academic research libraries in North America. The University Library comprises 19 libraries on the University of Michigan campus and offers a wealth of resources in traditional as well as digital formats. Major historical repositories include the Clements Library, Bentley Library, and Hatcher Library Special Collections. The Library's expert staff is committed to helping patrons tap the full potential of these information resources and to providing a full spectrum of assistance for research and teaching. Founded in 1962, the Center for Research on Learning and Teaching (CRLT) at the University of Michigan was the first teaching center in the country. CRLT partners with U-M faculty, graduate students, and administrators to promote a university culture that values and rewards teaching, respects and supports individual differences among learners, and encourages the creation of learning environments in which diverse students can learn and excel. The University of Michigan Institute for Social Research (ISR) is the world's largest academic social science survey and research organization. A leader in developing and applying new social science methods, the ISR is committed to educating and training the next generation of empirical social and behavioral scientists. Financial Aid

The History Department, the Rackham Graduate School and the College of Literature, Sciences and the Arts at the University of Michigan offer all students admitted to the Ph.D. program in history a five-year program of support. This five-year funding package begins with fellowship support for the first year of study. The following four years are funded through three years of a Graduate Student Instructorship, an additional year of fellowship support, and one summer of research. The timing and distribution of this support will be customized to the individual needs and eligibility of each student. The fellowship and instructorships include stipends, tuition and medical insurance. Provision of each year of this funding package is conditional upon satisfactory progress toward the degree and satisfactory fulfillment of teaching obligations.

Degree Requirements

Students are expected to complete course work as Pre-Candidates in the first two, or occasionally three, years of study. The preliminary examination qualifying students to write the dissertation must be taken before the end of the third year of study. After passing preliminary examinations, students are encouraged to complete dissertation research and writing in accord with the demands of their research topics. Ideally, students will complete all requirements for the Ph.D. within six to seven years.
