Program Description
The Department of History at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign offers a comprehensive program in all fields. The Department is especially strong in cultural history, the history of race and ethnicity, and the history of gender and has superlative programs in US history, African-American history, European history, Latin American history, African history, and East Asian history.
Special Programs or Resources
Special resources at Illinois include a variety of Title VI area-studies centers for Russia and Eastern Europe, for Latin America, and for Africa. Important cross-disciplinary programs have been established in Global Studies, Women's and Gender studies, African-American studies, Latino/a Studies, Jewish Studies, and Asian-American Studies. There is also a thriving humanities center, the Illinois Program for Research in the Humanities. The University of Illinois has the third largest university library in the country.
Financial Aid
Almost all students are provided with multi-year financial aid packages which consist of a mix of fellowships and teaching and research assistantships. Historically there has been a very good match between teaching assistantships and graduate students.
Degree Requirements
The requirements to advance to candidacy include 13 courses and the successful completion of three written qualifying examinations in each of the student's three fields plus an oral examination that focuses on the dissertation proposal.
