Program Description

Two Departmental concentrations are available to doctoral students. These are in Work, Race, and Gender in the Urban World (WRGUW), and Encounters, Empires, and Ethnographies (Encounters). The Department of History also participates in three interdepartmental concentrations: Gender and Womens Studies, Latin American and Latino Studies, and Central and Eastern European Studies.

Special Programs or Resources

The doctoral program at UIC benefits from programming at the Institute for the Humanities, UIC; the excellent collections and programming at the nearby Newberry Library; and a regular faculty/grad student brown bag lunch with presentations by both faculty and graduate students. We also host an annual interdisciplinary graduate student conference in the spring of each year.

Financial Aid

Applicants to the PhD and MA/PhD program are eligible to be considered for four-year History Doctoral Awards, which are enhanced TAships; University Fellowships awarded by the Graduate College (also a four year award, which includes two years of Teaching Assistantship and two years of fellowship support); and the Abraham Lincoln Fellowships (designed to increase minority recruitment and identical in funding to the University Fellowships).

Degree Requirements

Candidates must complete at least 64 semesters of graduate work beyond the masters degree (96 from the BA), exclusive of History 501 (Introduction to Graduate Studies). Of this amount, at least 16 are in didactic courses, and 48 are in thesis research. Only grades of B or higher count toward the degree credits. In addition, written preliminary exams, a dissertation prospectus defense, and dissertation defense are required.
