Program Description
Graduate study at the University of Florida is intended to prepare students for academic careers, or for employment in government or private agencies. The department offers major fields of study in U.S. History, European History, Latin American History, African History, and the History of Science. In addition to these major fields, the department also offers formal MA and/or minor field programs in: Atlantic World, Gender History, and Legal History.
Special Programs or Resources
Students at the University of Florida have the advantage of working at a major research university, one with some particularly outstanding resources for research. The P.K. Yonge Library of Florida History is the preeminent collection of Florida-related materials. The Latin American Collection is among the nation's best, and the Caribbeana collection is perhaps without equal. Students at Florida also have the advantage of several outstanding Area Studies Centers that bring together scholars from a variety of disciplines: African Studies, Asian Studies, European Studies, and Latin American Studies. The University of Florida is also home to the Samuel Proctor Oral History Program, and home to the History of Science Society. Both offer opportunities for graduate students in History.
Financial Aid
The University of Florida Department of History offers incoming PhD students several types of competitive financial aid. Incoming students are eligible for Alumni Assistantships (currently $16,666/yr plus a tuition waiver) and Teaching Assistantships (currently $12,600/yr plus a tuition waiver). Either award may also come with a Grinter Fellowship, which adds another $2,000 to $3,000 to the annual stipend. Our students have also been competitive for other university fellowships. The department actively encourages and supports graduate students in applying for competitive national fellowships and awards as well, and past students have successfully competed for awards from the Social Science Research Council, Fulbright Foundation, Mellon Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Humanities.
Degree Requirements
The PhD in history requires a minimum of 90 credit hours beyond the Bachelor's degree. As a condition of candidacy into the Doctoral program students are required to take written qualifying examinations in the major and minor fields of study and an oral examination within 3 months after the written. Before being admitted to candidacy students must also successfully defend a dissertation prospectus within four months after the written qualifying exams. Students in U.S. history must first complete preliminary examinations based on the foundation seminars. After completion of the dissertation the student will complete an oral defense to finish the degree.
