Program Description
We have overall strengths in U.S., Europe, Latin America, Middle East, science, public history and the Atlantic World.
Special Programs or Resources
In addition, the department houses the Weider Institute on Napoleon and the French Revolution which interacts on campus with FSU's Winthrop-King Institute on French and Francophone Studies. The department also houses the Middle East Center, an interdisciplinary home that is growing very quickly. The master's program in Historical Administration and Public History prepares students to enter careers in historic preservation, museum management, and archival management. The department also houses the Wallace Ward Reichelt Program for Oral History. The library has a very deep collection on French history and culture of the 18th and 19th centuries. Students can also learn archival skills working in the Institute on World War II and the Human Experience in the department.
Financial Aid
Teaching assistantships and research assistantships are available for many qualified students. The department and the University also offer several competitive fellowships.
Degree Requirements
30 hours of course work are required at the master's level, plus a thesis, but there are no written or oral comprehensive exams. At the Ph.D. level, 30 hours of course work, and written and oral comprehensive exams are required.
