These may not overlap the major field, except in Twentieth Century Europe where one reading seminar may be in modern Europe; Gender History, and War & Society where one minor field may be in an area related to the regional subject area of their thesis research. The grade for each minor field will be based on the seminar requirements, the examination and a historiographical paper, in combination as indicated by the minor field supervisor. Under exceptional circumstances a minor field may be taken in the second term.
Major Field seminar: Preparation begins in January and takes the form of supervised reading. Doctoral candidates will meet regularly with their field supervisors and submit written work from time to time.
Comprehensive examination, comprised of written and oral components, will be held in the month preceding September 15 of the second year of the program.
