Program Description

The Department of History offers a wide selection of undergraduate courses in Canadian, European, American, Latin American, African, and East Asian history leading to a three-year BA in History or a four-year BA (Honours) in History. We also offer courses and research supervision leading to MA and PhD degrees in History.
At the M.A. level the Department of History offers two 5.0-credit programs: an M.A. in History, and an M.A. in Public History. Supervision is available in a wide variety of areas, including Canadian; American; Medieval; Early Modern and Modern European; British; Caribbean; Latin American; Atlantic World; Modern Asian; Sub-Saharan African; International; Public History; and the History of Women, Gender, and Family. We also offer a program of study and research leading to the Doctor of Philosophy degree with a concentration in Canadian history or the history of Women, Gender, and Family. Ph.D. candidates may be accepted in other areas depending upon the availability of appropriate supervision. We strongly recommend that students consult the departmental web site for further information about courses.

Special Programs or Resources

University resources are supplemented by the presence in the city of Library and Archives Canada, and the libraries of the various federal government departments and national museums and heritage institutions, mostly notably those of the historical sections of National Defense, and Foreign Affairs and International Trade.

Financial Aid

Applicants are strongly advised to apply for the Social Science and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) and Ontario Graduate Scholarships (OGS) in the autumn before arriving. Virtually all our full-time doctoral students receive generous internal funding over and above what may be secured from these external competitions. Under the students' collective agreement doctoral students are entitled to three years of internal scholarship funding, and five years of teaching assistantship. Those with averages of straight "A" or better on admission also receive a domestic tuition scholarship for four years. Our graduate studies office provides assistance for research travel or travel to give a conference paper of up to $600 within Canada or up to $1,200 outside Canada per student per academic year. There are three additional funds that can assist with conference travel, one of which is managed by the department. We have a broad range of internal endowment awards for students in program, some based on merit and others on financial need.

Degree Requirements

Doctoral students must complete the course HIST 6808 Historical Theory and Method (1.0 credits) which is offered in alternating years, major field tutorial (1.5 credits over three terms) and oral comprehensive examination (0.5 credits), two minor fields with written examinations (1.0 credits each), and a thesis (5.0 credits).
