The Graduate program offers eight major fields of study: Canada; History of Science; Latin America; Medieval and Early Modern Europe; Military/Diplomatic; Modern Europe; United States; and World. Among its many areas of strength, the department is recognized as a leader in military history and the history of western Canada.
Special Programs or Resources
The manuscript and material culture collections of the Glenbow Museum, located in Calgary, are a major archive for the study of the Canadian west. Department faculty and gradate students also participate in The Centre for Military and Strategic Studies; the Latin America Research Centre; and the Institute for United States Policy Studies. Along with general funding for new students, many fellowships for graduate study in history are available through the University. Students are encouraged to investigate these opportunities at: http://www.grad.ucalgary.ca/Funding/New%20Awards.aspx.
Financial Aid
All doctoral students admitted to our program are guaranteed funding of $12,000 plus tuition for the first 4 years of their program. For first year doctoral students this will often include a Dean's Entrance Scholarship of $6000 (which requires no research or service), a Teaching Assistantship and smaller scholarships from the Faculty of Graduate Studies (requiring no research or service).
Degree Requirements
Doctoral students are required to take 3 FCE (full course equivalents) in the first year and by the end of the second year of the program are required to write two Comprehensive Candidacy exams in Major and Minor Fields, defended in one Oral Examination.
