Program Description

The Department of History at the University of British Columbia offers a diverse program of studies leading to the PhD degree in fields that include Aboriginal History, East Asian History (China and Japan), Canadian History, History of Science, Environmental History, US History, International Relations, Migration History, Medieval History, Early Modern European History, Modern European History, South Asia History, Southeast Asian History, Gender History, History of the Soviet Union, and Latin American History.

Special Programs or Resources

Doctoral students have access to library resources which are among the best in North America. The UBC Library is the second largest research library in Canada, with especially strong collections in the fields of East Asia, Canada, Britain, and Central and Eastern Europe. The History Department is the center of a community of history scholars that includes faculty members and student colleagues from research institutes that contribute to the training and professional development of students, including the Institute of Asian Research, the Liu Institute for Global Issues, the Centre for Research in Womens Studies and Gender Relations, the Centre of International Relations, and the Institute for European Studies.

Financial Aid

New doctoral students are offered a four-year funding package that can include Teaching Assistantships, Research Assistantships, and Graduate Entrance Scholarships. New doctoral students may also be put forward by the department for Faculty of Arts Scholarships as well as for scholarships in United States Studies.

Degree Requirements

Doctoral students are required to complete 4 courses (including the PhD research seminar), a language requirement, and a Teaching and Professional Development workshop. Qualifying exams are required in two major fields, one thematic and one regionally based. Each exam is a 5,000 word written examination, completed over one week, and then examined orally by a supervisory committee.
