Program Description

The University of Texas offers an exceptionally wide range of resources for graduate study in many fields of history. With more than 65 faculty members, outstanding library and archival collections, and a lively community of over 150 graduate students, the university is a leading center for historical study and training at the highest levels. Financial Aid

The History Department has a limited number of Teaching Assistant positions available each year. Most are awarded to students as part of multi-year recruitment packages; a few are available to students who do not have guaranteed funding. TA work consists of grading examinations and other assignments and holding weekly office hours. Teaching Assistants who hold an M.A. (or have completed at least 30 hours of graduate coursework) receive a stipend in the amount of $14,489 per year; TAs who do not hold an M.A. receive $13,153. All TAs holding regular appointments of at least 20 hours a week also receive health insurance benefits and tuition assistance (see Office of Graduate Studies' TA/AI Tuition Assistance web page).

Each year the History Department offers recruitment fellowships to a number of incoming graduate students based on their regular admission applications; no separate fellowship application is required. Each recruitment fellowship carries a stipend of $18,000 per year, plus tuition and a health insurance supplement; such fellowships are generally combined with a multi-year offer of Teaching Assistantships.

In addition, the department offers continuing fellowships to a number of its currently enrolled graduate students. These awards are generally made in the fourth year and are based on the students records since entering graduate school, research proposals, personal statements, and letters of recommendation. The application deadline is generally in March.

Degree Requirements

To earn a Ph.D. in history at the university, a student must complete at least 36 hours of graduate coursework. Specific requirements are laid out in the Official Guide. Students who completed an M.A. at another institution may transfer up to 12 hours of credit, as applicable.

In addition to the required coursework, students earning a Ph.D. must pass a written and oral comprehensive qualifying examination in their major field of study, meet the foreign language requirements set for that field, and complete and defend a dissertation that constitutes a substantial piece of original research.
