Program Description
The Ph.D. program emphasizes the intellectual and cultural breadth and expertise necessary for college and university teaching and for creative, effective scholarship.
Special Programs or Resources
Temple houses the Center for the Study of Force and Diplomacy, the Feinstein Center for American Jewish History, the Journal of the Early Republic, the Biographical Dictionary Project of Early Pennsylvania Legislators, and the Urban Archives.
Financial Aid
Students admitted to the doctoral program will be considered for University Fellowships, teaching assistantships, research assistantships, academic internships or readerships, each of which carries a stipend plus waiver of tuition and most fees. Either partial or full tuition scholarships are also awarded, if a student applies for financial aid.
Degree Requirements
11 course minimum, 3 field written exam, 1 language exam, 1 oral and a final defense. All Ph.D. students have to enroll on a full-time basis. They are expected to complete course work within two years and advance to Ph.D. candidacy within three years of matriculation.
