Program Description

The University of Oklahoma Department of History offers doctoral degrees in Western, Environmental, Native American, and Latin American History. Our program emphasizes research, and we are dedicated to the professionalization and placement of our students.

Special Programs or Resources

OU History students have the advantage of access to the Western History Collection, one of the largest western history archives in the United States. OU's Bizzell Library contains a vast body of secondary sources and microfilm collections on both US and Latin American history.

Financial Aid

For doctoral students the OU History Department provides four-year graduate assistantships on a competitive basis. We also offer a series of fellowships for promising graduate-level scholars. Our Department awards an annual series of prizes for outstanding graduate student performance. Finally, travel money is available for research projects and conference participation.

Degree Requirements

The University requires 90 hours of course work for the PhD degree. The 90 hours will include 30 hours credit from MA work, at least 30 hours credit of graduate course work (nine of these hours can be outside the department), and the remaining credit hours working toward the dissertation.

On completion of all course work a two part general examination is given, a 6 hour written examination over each of the three fields and a 2 hour oral examination after the completion of the written exam.
