Program Description
The Miami University History Department is not currently accepting applications for the doctoral program. Miami University's doctoral program equips students to pursue an academic career. It is a small program, admitting only one or two new students each year. Students are admitted to doctoral study only after completing a master's degree, at Miami or elsewhere. Miami offers the doctorate in two major fields: Origins and History of the United States and Europe since 1500. Minor fields may be one of those two, or one of the following: gender and comparative women's history, and world and comparative history.
Special Programs or Resources
Students gain classroom experience and teacher training under close supervision of permanent faculty. You will hone your skills in an atmosphere that values quality teaching.
Financial Aid
All new doctoral students are awarded a teaching assistantship.
Degree Requirements
The degree requires 60 semester hours beyond the M.A.; at least 30 hours must be in course work other than the dissertation. Course work is followed by a comprehensive examination (written and oral) in the major and minor fields. There is an oral defense following completion of the dissertation.
