Program Description

In 2003, with North Dakota State University in Fargo, the department started a joint Ph.D. program. The program has not yet produced any graduates. At present, seven students have enrolled in the joint program, and are en route to their degrees. The department also offers the MA and DA degrees.

Special Programs or Resources

In its graduate programs, the department offers courses and research in American and European history, with special strengths in the Great Plains, women's history and public history. Besides the University's library holdings, numerous archives are within four-to-five hours driving time from the campus: Bismarck, ND; Fargo, ND; St. Paul, MN; and Winnepeg, Manitoba.

Financial Aid

Qualified students are offered Teaching Assistantships and those in the doctoral programs teach both survey and upper-division courses.

Degree Requirements

Students must satisfactorily complete 90 hours beyond the bachelor's degree. Students will write three comprehensive examinations in their major and minor fields. Students will complete an oral examination based on the written examinations.
