Financial Aid

The Department makes every effort to recruit top applicants to its Ph.D. program. In the 2009-2010 application cycle, 43% of admitted Ph.D. applicants received offers of financial support. The Department employs 20-25 graduate students per semester as teaching assistants. ABD doctoral students are eligible to hold Graduate Part-Time Instructor (GPTI) positions. These positions provide teaching experience and involve complete responsibility for one or more sections of an undergraduate course. Both T.A. and GPTI positions provide a stipend and tuition remission.

Degree Requirements

A minimum of 45 semester hours of post-baccalaureate course work at the 5000 level or above is required for the degree, including a minimum of six hours of seminar work at the 7000 level. With the approval of a candidate's advisor, up to fifteen hours of prior graduate work in history, whether completed at the University of Colorado or elsewhere, may be transferred into the Ph.D. program. A comprehensive examination, consisting of written and oral components, must be successfully completed before the candidate advances to the dissertation.
