Editor’s Note: The AHA Council decided to seek ratification of the “Resolution on United States Government Practices Inimical to the Values of the Historical Profession” that was adopted at the AHA business meeting on January 6, 2007. In this connection, we are publishing the text of an explanatory note by them on the procedures that are being adopted.

In its discussion on January 7, 2007, of the "Resolution on United States Government Practices Inimical to the Values of the Historical Profession" adopted by the AHA business meeting on January 6, 2007, the Council considered the appropriateness of the Association taking a position on the particular issue addressed by the resolution. Also of concern was the fact that the resolution was not transmitted to the AHA in time for publication in Perspectives prior to the business meeting. Members of the Council reviewed carefully the options allowed the council for dealing with a resolution as defined by the AHA's Constitution.

Ultimately a majority of the Council agreed that it should accept the resolution but should also take the further step of requesting its ratification by a majority of those voting in an electronic ballot.

The Association will also provide space on its web site for members to discuss the resolution beginning February 15 and extending through February 28. An electronic ballot will be e-mailed to members (excepting members who have asked the AHA not to send them electronic messages) on March 1, 2007, by Election Services Corporation which has managed AHA voting on officers and other representatives since 2005. Voting will begin at 12:01 a.m. on March 1 and extend through midnight, March 9, and will be limited to members in good standing as of February 13, 2007.
