Among the first economists to recognize the importance of small, independent businesses, Joseph Schumpeter, along with Karl Marx, predicted the collapse of capitalism. New York City is home to thousands of small businesses that have introduced innovative products and services. Yet in his classic book Capitalism, Socialism and Democracy, Schumpeter posits that the system that encourages entrepreneurs will also sow the seeds of the system’s demise.
Tom Ballou reviews this important work in economics and social theory.
