This tour features three historic schools on the Comstock. It will start at the 1865 Dayton Grammar School, which is celebrating its 150th birthday this year making it the oldest school in Nevada still at its original location. This portion of the tour will be led by Laura Tennant, noted historian for the Historical Society of Dayton Valley. The second stop on the tour will be the Silver City Schoolhouse. Originally built in 1867 it suffered a catastrophic fire in 2004. Dr. Ron Reno will talk about the remarkable reconstruction of this building following the fire. The tour will end at the magnificent Fourth Ward School in Virginia City, completed in 1877. Barbara Mackey, Director of the Fourth Ward School Museum will lead us through a rare example of a Second Empire school.
