District of Columbia Housing Authority (DCHA) has collected a large volume of historical photographs and reports dating back to the 1930s. In an effort to preserve the history of our agency and its communities, DCHA’s Office of Public Affairs and Communications (OPA&C) is planning to rehouse, organize, describe, and digitize the records according to professional archival standards and practices. Both paper and electronic collections will be open to the public. We are also planning to conduct research into the history of our organization and public housing communities and draft an administrative history of the agency.

We would like to hire three students majoring in archival studies or history to assist our department with archival processing and historical research during the Summer or Fall Semester. We offer a stipend of $1,500-$2,000 and flexible work schedule.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assists in development of DCHA archives collection dating back to the 1930s and documenting the history of DCHA and its communities.
  • Assists in assessment and appraisal of historical photographs collected by DCHA.
  • Rehouses archival records into acid/lignin-free envelopes, folders, and boxes.
  • Performs preservation and conservation tasks, such as removal of damaging attachments.
  • Organizes and arranges the records.
  • Describes the records and assists in finding aids development.
  • Assists in digitization of the records.
  • Researches the history of DCHA and its communities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualification Requirements:

Current students pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in archival studies, library/information science, history, or a related field.  Preference will be given to graduate students and candidates who completed courses in archival processing, preservation, and/or history of Washington, D.C. Strong research skills and attention to detail required.
