On Friday, March 20, 2015 the Smithsonian’s National Museum in American History will convene a symposium on “Religion in Early America.” Led by Stephen Prothero, Professor of Religion at Boston University, and including important scholars from across the country, the symposium will explore three themes on the role of religion in the development of the U.S.  The first is diversity of religious traditions, and how they were considered as the nation came into being.  The second is the enduring principle of religious freedom that was incorporated into the 1st Amendment. The third is the growth of religious diversity and how it shaped American society during the first half of the 19th century.

The symposium will be free and open to the public and webcast live for those participating remotely. We encourage you to invite any interested colleagues, students, and friends. It will convene in the Warner Brothers Theater on the first floor of the museum at 9:00 AM and continue until 3:00 PM.  The National Museum of American History is located on the National Mall at 14th St. and Constitution Ave. NW and a short walk from the Smithsonian Metro Stop on the Blue/Orange/Silver Lines.
