NEH Summer Seminar for Faculty on World War I in the Middle East

We are now accepting applications to "World War I in the Middle East," a four-week seminar to be held at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., from July 6 to August 2, 2014. On the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the Great War, we invite scholars of all fields to re-assess its impact on the Middle East. We will discuss current debates about the war's origins, the course of battle, popular suffering from famine and disease, the Armenian genocide, nationalism, and the peace settlements that extended European colonization and sparked new rounds of warfare in the early 1920s. Participants will divide their time in Washington between the seminar and pursuit of their own research in the city's plentiful archives and libraries. Scholars admitted to the seminar receive a stipend to help cover the cost of travel and housing. Graduate students, independent scholars and faculty are invited to apply. Hosts are Mustafa Aksakal of Georgetown University and Elizabeth F. Thompson of University of Virginia. Guest speakers are Eugene Rogan of St. Antony's, Oxford and Salim Tamari of Birzeit University. See website for more information. Deadline for applications is March 4, 2014.
