Department and Organization Services Program (DOSP)*

*Formerly named the Institutional Services Program (ISP)

As the umbrella organization for the history profession, the American Historical Association offers a wealth of publications that are indispensable tools for the profession--directories, newsletters, essay series, guides, pamphlets, reports, and more. Sign up your department, program, or office for the AHA's Department and Organization Services Program (DOSP) and ensure that you and your colleagues have timely access to the AHA's valuable resources. DOSP subscribers receive more than a dozen publications every year. These publications provide useful information on current developments in research, teaching, and the profession at large.

(Note: for information on institutional subscriptions to the American Historical Review, please visit the Institutional Subscriptions page. Individuals should visit the Individual Membership page.)

DOSP Subscribers Receive

  1. The AHA's Directory of History Departments, Historical Organizations, and Historians. Directory will profile more than 800 history departments in two- and four-year colleges and universities, and more than 150 historical organizations in the United States and Canada. To insure that the Directory is the most comprehensive index of historians and history programs available, this edition will include the names and contact information for an additional 7,500 AHA members and is an indispensable reference for students, faculty, and public historians. (Fees for listing in the Directory are indicated on the subscription form.) Published in early October. DOSP subscribers also have access to the online version of the Directory by logging into DOSP member Section.

  2. Perspectives. The AHA’s national news monthly for the historical profession provides articles and commentary on the practice of history, in columns on such topics as teaching, research, technology, film and media, and public history. Perspectives also publishes statistical information on salaries, new doctoral recipients, and other professional concerns. The newsletter’s employment section provides a comprehensive current listing of openings both within academia and outside. Published monthly, September through May. (Category I: 5 copies; Category II: 3 copies; Category III: 2 copies)

  3. The OAH Magazine of History: A bimonthly publication for teachers of history and social studies, each issue contains articles on recent scholarship, historiography, classroom teaching ideas, columns for input by teachers and students, and other features pertaining to history and history education.

  4. NCH Advocacy Update. The NCH Advocacy Update details information about developments in Washington, D.C., that affect teaching and research. This quarterly legislative and federal policy report by Bruce Craig, director of the National Coalition for History, supplements the "NCH Advocacy Update" column in Perspectives. The report includes NCH Briefing Sheets and other valuable material dealing with current policy issues, such as funding of cultural programs, copyright issues, access to government records, and current telecommunications policy.

  5. The Directory of Affiliated Societies. This annual directory provides current information on the more than 100 specialized historical societies and social science organizations that are officially recognized as AHA affiliates. The AHA works with a wide range of constituencies on collaborative projects and publications, joint prizes and awards, and co-sponsored meetings and conferences. Listings include information on officers, activities (including annual meeting dates), publications, date of founding, membership size, annual dues, and statement of purpose for each society. No other publication provides access to such a wide array of organizations, representing history's diverse geographic, topical, and chronological specializations and varied methodological and professional perspectives. This directory also includes an index of officers' names. Published annually in the fall.

  6. AHA's Annual Meeting Program. The AHA's annual meeting is held each January, the first Thursday through Sunday after New Year's Day. The Program, containing details on nearly 200 sessions and an index of participants and exhibitors, is distributed in October before the meeting.

  7. Several History Essay Series. The AHA publishes unique series in which each pamphlet—written and peer-reviewed by recognized and acclaimed experts in the field—provides a synthetic overview of a specific historical topic in fewer than 100 pages. Current series include Teaching Diversity: People of Color and Historical Perspectives on Technology, Society, and Culture, published jointly with the Society for the History of Technology.

  8. Professional Publications. Periodically, the AHA issues special reports and other publications that concern the profession. DOSP subscribers receive a copy of each such publication as it is released. Examples of these publications include:

    • Statement on Standards of Professional Conduct
    • Becoming a Historian: A Survival Manual
    • Careers for Students of History
    • And More !

  9. AHA Publications Catalog. The complete line of AHA publications is described in this handy annual booklet (online edition now available!). New releases as well as backlist titles, prices, an order form, and ordering instructions are included.

  10. Discounts on Other AHA Services. Subscribers to the Department and Organization Services Program also receive member discounts on AHA publications--a benefit extended to your college or university bookstore when ordering classroom materials for the department. Subscribers will also receive a 50 percent discount on orders of AHA mailing lists as well.

Additional copies of the pamphlets, professional publications, and other back publications are available to DOSP subscribers at special discounts.
