William A. Dunning (May 12, 1857–August 25, 1922) received his PhD from Columbia in 1885 and continued to teach there. His most enduring work was in the field of European intellectual history, particularly the three volume History of Political Theories, Ancient and Medieval (1902). However, he is also noted for writings and the students he directed in the history of the Reconstruction in the United States. In works like Reconstruction, Political and Economic, 1865–1877, he helped to ratify the unification of North and South on principles of white supremacy (as noted in John Hope Franklin’s Mirror for Americans: A Century of Reconstruction History).
