Joyce Appleby Biography

Joyce Appleby (April 9, 1929–December 23, 2016) taught early American history at UCLA beginning in 1981, having begun her career as a historian at San Diego State University in 1967. Writing on 17th- and 18th-century England and France in addition to early America, she had an abiding interest in how changing economic systems prompted new ways of thinking about human nature and social action.
