Summer Study Abroad in Canada: Six Nations Iroquois (or People of the Longhouse)
Dr Arwin D. Smallwood, associate professor of history, University of Memphis, will lead students on a month-long trip from Montreal to Toronto, traveling through some of the communities associated with the Six Nations Iroquois. Including Kahnawake, a Mohawk community near Montreal,Tyendinaga in Ontario and the Six Nations at Grand River, near Toronto. Where students will attend Iroquoian linguistics and philology seminars, tour historic areas, learn about the spiritual ways of the Nations and the archaeology of the area, and visit with members of the Nations.

Field School in Buildings, Landscapes and Cultures
Schedule: Preparatory Workshop (attendance required), June 4, 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM
Class Dates: June 11 - July 14, 2012
This course provides students an immersion experience in the field recording of the built environment and cultural landscapes and an opportunity to learn how to write history literally “from the ground up.” Students will receive training in site documentation (including photography, measured drawings, digital documentation, audio-visual production), historic interpretation of buildings and landscapes (focusing on how to “read” buildings within its material, political, social, cultural and economic contexts), and primary source research (including oral history, archival research, architectural analysis). They will create site reports on historic buildings and cultural landscapes that will become part of the historical record of Wisconsin.

The conference will examine the making of the modern British monarchy through a programme of 45 papers covering topics such as, the global reach of the British monarchy, royal dress and material culture, the relationship between monarchy and the media and the portrayal of monarchs in film and theatre. The Vernacular Architecture Forum invites paper proposals for its Annual Meeting in Madison, Wisconsin, June 6-10, 2012. Papers may address vernacular buildings, sites, or cultural landscapes worldwide. Submissions on all vernacular topics are welcome, but we encourage papers that explore topics related to the following conference themes: the relationship between rural landscapes and regional urban centers; placemaking as it pertains to the relationship between work and home; regional trends in modernism (particularly in the Upper Midwest); ethnicity and heritage preservation; and evolution of Midwestern rural buildings and landscapes. We particularly welcome papers that explore the relationship of environmental history and cultural landscapes around these themes. The deadline for proposals is September 12, 2011. Wendat and Wyandot Studies Conference Wendake (Quebec City), Canada, June 13-16, 2012 Project Yawenda and the Huron-Wendat Nation are pleased to announce the first Wendat and Wyandot Studies Conference: Wendat and Wyandot Continuities. The conference aims at bringing together researchers and practitioners from both native communities and academia, who are interested in the Wendat and Wyandot(te) peoples from Quebec, Oklahoma, Kansas, Michigan, and elsewhere. Special focus will be given to expressions of these nations history, culture, language, society, as well as the assertion of their rights. The NEH invites applications to participate in a collaborative, three-week Institute focused on the works of Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519). The program is designed to encompass multiple disciplinary perspectives, including art and architectural history, Renaissance studies, the history of science, literature, philosophy and religious studies. This heterogeneous group, which reflects the interdisciplinary culture of the Renaissance, will explore dynamic relations between early modern art and science, engaging in a multifaceted analysis of Leonardo's many paintings, drawings and writings.

The First Interdisciplinary American Studies Conference will take place in Marrakech, Morocco, December 5-8, 2012. The theme of the conference is Interdisciplinary Perspectives on the Arab Spring and its Implications for American Studies in Arab Universities. The conference aims to renew the existing lines of communication and open up new prospects of dialogue between US and Arab scholars of American Studies. The format of two-and-a-half-day conference will include an opening plenary session and three panel presentations. There will also be working groups paralleling the plenary themes to provide room for focus group discussions. The conference will offer an opportunity for the participants to discuss their research findings and share thoughts about their professional experiences and their specific contexts. The George C. Marshall International Center announces the 10th Annual Marshall Immersion Workshop, promising an exciting professional and collegial experience for high school-level American and world history teachers, and social studies supervisors. All expenses are paid, and participants receive a $200 stipend, free materials, and re-certification points.
The workshop focuses on the far-reaching impact of the European Recovery Program (ERP) commonly known as "The Marshall Plan." The week-long program begins at Marshall's museum home, Dodona Manor, in Leesburg, VA. Participants will gain a better understanding of the life and remarkable legacy of Secretary of State Marshall, specifically his significant role in securing the passage of the ERP. Participants will also visit the U.S. Department of State in Washington, DC. Participants will complete the week at the Marshall Museum and Library in Lexington, Virginia.
The application deadline is May 14, 2012.

The American Journalism Historians Association invites paper entries, panel proposals and abstracts of research in progress on any facet of media history for its 31st annual convention to be held October 11-13, 2012, in Raleigh N.C. Deadline for submissions is May 15, 2012.
Authors may submit only one research paper. Research entries must be no longer than 25 pages of text, double-spaced, in 12-point type, not including notes. The AJHA paper competition is administered electronically. Papers must be submitted in PDF, saved with author identification only in the file names and not in the papers. Each paper must be submitted as an attachment, with a 150-word abstract and contact information included in the text of the email to: ajhapapers@gmail.com.

Cork studies in the Irish revolution: the third home rule crisis 1912-14
Papers of up to 20 minutes duration are invited for the first conference in the series Cork studies in the Irish revolution, on the subject of the third home rule crisis of 1912-14, to be held in University College Cork, Ireland, 19-20 October, 2012.
Papers may deal with any aspect of the crisis. Proposals from all disciplines are welcome. Postgraduate students are particularly encouraged to offer papers.
Abstracts of 250 words may be submitted via the online form, or e-mailed to g.doherty@ucc.ie. Proposals for complete panels with a list of participating speakers and abstracts should be submitted by email.
The closing date for proposals is Friday, 6 April 2012.

The Port Huron Statement and the Making of the New Left, an open conference at the University of Michigan, October 31-November 2, 2012, will mark fifty years since publication of The Port Huron Statement by Students for a Democratic Society. The conference will explore the social, cultural, political, and global contexts for the rise of new radical movements from 1958-1965. Keynote addresses and two days of panels will feature Port Huron participants as well as scholars and writers concerned with the range and diversity of social activism in the United States and abroad in that period, with comparison to renewed protest in our own time. Astride two worlds: technology and the American Civil War

We seek proposals for papers to be presented in a symposium on technology and the American Civil War, as part of the Smithsonian Institution’s contribution to the war’s sesquicentennial commemoration. It will be hosted by the National Museum of American History in Washington, DC, 9-11 November 2012. Technology is defined to cover six broad areas: (1) smallarms and tactics; (2) artillery and fortifications; (3) naval technology; (4) logistics and communications; (5) science and medicine; and (6) industry and agriculture. In general we prefer broader topics to narrower; attention to continuity as well as novelty; and comparative approaches emphasizing historiography over narrative. We expect to publish a book based on the conference that may serve as a comprehensive introduction to the topic of technology and the American Civil War. The two-day conference will feature panels on many aspects of the 2012 presidential election: voting behavior, demographic trends, and the election outcome; general election strategies of the Obama and Republican nominee’s campaign organizations; the role of the media and public opinion; the role of economic policy; the role of domestic policy; the role of foreign and national security policy; and the makeup, policy inclinations, and relationship of the new 113th Congress with the president.

The year 2013 will mark the 50th anniversary of the passing of Dr. W.E.B. Du Bois. On his birthday in February of that year, it is fitting that Clark Atlanta University (CAU) celebrate his life and scholarship. In a fourday conference, beginning on February 20, 2013 and concluding on Du Boiss birthday of February 23, Clark Atlanta University will host panels that highlight his countless contributions, especially those produced in the 23 years of his tenure. This conference will be held as a conclusion to the yearlong W. E. B. Du Bois Major Works Seminar Series hosted by the Clark Atlanta University Office of the President, Office of the Provost, School of Arts and Sciences, and the Department of History.
