Overview
- The AHA has reserved substantial blocks of rooms at the Hyatt (1,500 rooms) and the Marriott (1,195 rooms). Rates will be $129 single and $169 double.
The AHA also has a block of 400 rooms at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront, with rates at $125 single and $155 double.
The Embassy Suites Hotel San Diego Bay–Downtown has been added to the AHA’s housing block to provide additional suite inventory for individuals or institutions that prefer this type accommodation, particularly those interviewing job candidates during the annual meeting. The hotel is a full-service all-suite property, and all suites set aside in the AHA block have a private bedroom with king bed and a spacious living room. The rate is $159 for single and double occupancy.
All rooms are subject to city and state taxes, currently 12.50 percent plus $.23 assessment per room, per night. Meeting rates are in effect three days before and after the January 7–10 meeting dates, and are for a limited number of rooms only at each property.
Hotel Reservation Process for 2010: For the 2010 meeting, the AHA has combined the registration and hotel reservation process. After preregistering for the meeting, attendees will receive an acknowledgment of preregistration that will include information on making a hotel reservation. This confirmation will have a link to make a reservation via customized web site or by calling the housing service directly. Only Annual Meeting attendees who have first completed the meeting registration process will be permitted to make hotel reservations at the AHA’s meeting rates, and the housing service will ask attendees to supply their badge number (which will be included in the meeting preregistration confirmation). The process is designed to ensure that the deeply discounted AHA meeting rates are reserved for those who support the Annual Meeting—its attendees and exhibitors—and not for tourists and others who want to book a low-priced room in San Diego.

Travel to San Diego
Association Travel Concepts (ACT) is the official travel agency for the AHA Annual Meeting. ATC has negotiated discounts with American Airlines, United Airlines, Amtrak, and Hertz Rent-a-Car to bring attendees special air, rail, and car rental rates that are lower than those available to the public. To take advantage of these rates and benefits, e-mail reservations@atcmeetings.com or call 800-458-9383. ATC is available for reservations from 8:30 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. EST, Monday through Friday. Attendees can also book tickets online at the AHA’s customized travel portal. Discounts apply for travel between January 4 and January 13, 2010. Some restrictions may apply. Service fees apply to ticketed reservations through ATC.
Attendees may also call their own agency or the vendors directly and refer to the following ID numbers:
United Airlines, 800-521-4041 (ID #510CK)
American Airlines, 800-654-2240 (ID # A6210AH)
Hertz Rentals, 800-433-1790 (ID #CV#031C0014)
Amtrak, 800-872-7245 (ID # X92Y-967)
Ground Transportation
From San Diego International Airport
San Diego International Airport (SAN) is 3 miles from downtown San Diego, and hosts 25 carriers in three terminals (Commuter, Terminal 1, and Terminal 2). Departures are not allowed from the San Diego airport between 11:30 p.m. and 6:30 a.m. The airport’s Red Bus offers free transportation services from terminal-to-terminal, running about every 10 minutes. There are curbside Red Bus stops at each of the three terminals. For the convenience of people with disabilities, the Red Bus vehicles are all wheelchair accessible. Shuttle, bus, and taxi service are available at the Transportation Plazas across from Terminals 1 and 2 and curbside at the Commuter Terminal.
A taxi to the meeting hotels takes 10 minutes with prices ranging from $10 to $14.
Rates for pay shuttles vary widely, based on destination, persons per van, and number of stops. Generally, however, service from the airport to the downtown hotels range from $7 to $14 per person.
Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) public bus, Flyer Route No. 992, operates to the downtown area for a fare of $2.25. Buses depart the airport for downtown approximately every 10 to 15 minutes and operate between 6:00 a.m. and midnight.
From Amtrak
Amtrak’s Santa Fe Depot is located in the Centre City area (downtown) San Diego at 1050 Kettner Boulevard and is open daily from 5:15 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Although within walking distance to the meeting hotels, unfamiliar travelers with luggage will find it easier to take the short cab ride (approximately $5) to their hotels.
Job Center
Job Center (formerly Job Register) reservation forms are now posted online for downloading by institutions that will be interviewing in San Diego. Suites and tables are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
