Library of Congress: Open House

The Library of Congress welcomes members of the American Historical Association as researchers. AHA members are cordially invited to the Library of Congress for an Open House on Friday, January 9 from 8:30 a.m.–5:00 p.m. The library's collections are the most extensive in the world, covering the history and culture of other countries, including international material collected by its overseas offices and American publications on all subjects. Expert staff can guide and assist with bibliographic and subject-matter searches in approximately 160 languages and all formats. In addition to books, serials, and newspapers, the library has extensive manuscript, map, photograph, film, recorded sound, folklore, and music collections with growing electronic resources. The "Open House" will give AHA members the opportunity to visit select reading rooms and discuss the collections and services with library staff.

A special version of the " Research Orientation to the Library of Congress" with a focus on history will be given during the Open House from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the National Digital Library Learning Center of the Madison Building. This session will feature: suggestions on how to conduct research efficiently in the library; instruction on how to use the Library of Congress Subject Headings and other sources for searching accurately by subject; and information on using the library's card and online catalogs. It will also provide a tour of the collections of American Memory and Global Gateways. Additionally, this session will inform participants about the variety of fellowships and grants available to encourage post-doctoral research using the library's resources.

The reading rooms participating in the open house are the American Folklife Center, the African and Middle Eastern Division, the Asian Reading Room, the European Reading Room, the Geography and Map Reading Room, the Hispanic Reading Room, the Motion Picture and Television Reading Room, the Newspaper and Current Periodical Reading Room, the Performing Arts Reading Room, the Prints and Photographs Reading Room, the Recorded Sound Reference Center, and the Science and Business Reading Room. During the open house, attendees will be able to visit the reading rooms without obtaining a reader registration card, but may be asked to show a conference badge. Please note that due to security restrictions items from the collection may not be requested without a reader registration card.
