Statement of Purpose: The Dr. William M. Scholl Center for American History and Culture promotes innovative research and teaching through the use of the Newberry Library's rich collections in American history, culture, and the humanities. Scholl Center projects develop research, reference, and curriculum materials for scholars, teachers, and the public. In cooperation with Chicago-area universities, the Center sponsors seminars that bring scholars and students from different institutions together to discuss their ongoing research in a workshop format. The Center for Family and Community History was founded in 1971. In 1991, it became known as the Dr. William M. Scholl Center for Family and Community History. In 2008, the Center assumed its current name. All activities of the Scholl Center are supported in part by the Dr. Scholl Foundation.
