Statement of Purpose: The purpose of the Association for Documentary Editing (ADE) is to serve as a professional association for its membership, which is comprised of historians, literary scholars, and other individuals with an interest in the editing of important historical documents (i.e. the papers, published works, and other records of significant individuals and groups). The ADE provides its members a forum for the exchange of ideas on editorial practices and standards. The editing of historical documents has been practiced in the United States for over two hundred years. Until the 1970s, however, when the ADE was established, little had been done to record and codify the methods documentary editors employed in their work. Before that time, editors embarking on new projects could find little to guide their efforts. The ADE is committed to the highest professional standards in transcription and editorial methodology, in annotation and conceptual indexing, in education and project management, and in the integration of new technologies into editorial practices. Documentary editors in the past focused their attention on traditional historical and literary figures and collections, such as the papers of the founding fathers, but as the profession has expanded, so have the subjects, which now encompass the sciences, medicine, philosophy, religion, and the arts. The majority of editing done on ADE-associated projects is carried out by university-based editors, researchers, and faculty members, and these projects often employ full-time staffs. Editors working on smaller or even solo projects, however, are also welcomed members of the Association. The ADE encourages support for the publication of our documentary heritage by working closely with federal agencies and other institutions that fund documentary editions and by educating legislators, administrators, scholars, and the general public about the enduring value of documentary editing.
