    Jim Grossman is executive director of the American Historical Association. From 1997–2010, he was vice president for research and education at the Newberry Library, while also teaching graduate courses at the University of Chicago. He received his PhD from the University of California, Berkeley, and has taught at the University of Chicago and the University of California, San Diego. He is the author of Land of Hope: Chicago, Black Southerners, and the Great Migration (Univ. of Chicago Press, 1989) and A Chance to Make Good: African Americans, 1900–1929 (Oxford Univ. Press, 1997).

  • Shatha Almutawa

    Shatha is the associate editor of Perspectives on History. She received her PhD from the University of Chicago Divinity School, where she worked on Muslim and Jewish intellectual history. Her BA is from Mount Holyoke College. From 2009–13 she was editor of Sightings, which is published by the Martin Marty Center for the Advanced Study of Religion, and she also worked at the University of Chicago Press, Inc. magazine and the journal CrossCurrents.

  • Julia Brookins

    Julia Brookins has worked at the AHA since November 2010. She staffs the Teaching Division, serves on the editorial board of Perspectives on History, and assists in developing and implementing initiatives to advance the historical profession and history in public life. Her current projects include the nationwide history Tuning project, the AHA’s project to broaden the career horizons of history PhDs, and an effort to integrate the scholarship of teaching and learning into the disciplinary training of history graduate students. She received a BA in history from Harvard University and a PhD in US history from the University of Chicago.

    Matt received a BA in international relations and East Asian studies with a minor in Japanese from Eckerd College in 2007. Matt works in the business office, where he oversees the sales and distribution of publications and assists the business office in its daily operation.

  • Seth Denbo

    Director of Scholarly Communication and Digital Initiatives

    Seth oversees the publication department of the AHA and is working to develop innovative digital projects to enhance the organization’s mission. He earned his PhD from the University of Warwick and is a cultural historian of 18th-century Britain. He has taught British history in universities in both the United States and the United Kingdom. He has also worked on digital projects at Maryland Institute for Technology in the Humanities at UMD and the Department for Digital Humanities at King’s College London. Over the past 10 years, Seth has participated actively in the development of innovative digital tools and methods for historical scholarship.

  • Debbie Ann Doyle

    Debbie serves as primary staff for the Association’s Research Division and for its standing committees and task forces, including the Committee on Minority Historians, the Committee on Women Historians, the Graduate and Early Career Committee, the Committee on Affiliated Societies, and the Advisory Committee on Disability. She also serves as the primary contact for public history matters for the Association. She works with the director of meetings on annual meeting functions and is the liaison for the Local Arrangements Committee and the Program Committee. Debbie received a BA in history from Clark University in 1990, a master’s degree from American University in 1993, and her PhD in American history from American University in August 2003.

  • Elizabeth Elliott

    Jacob provides support for the AHA's Publications Department, including assistance with general content editing, image research, and workflow with the AHA's various publications, including Perspectives on History. Additionally, Jacob contributes to the AHA Today blog, including the Grant of the Week feature. Jacob received his BA in history from California State University, Long Beach in May 2014. His particular research interests revolve around histories of space exploration.

    Matthew received a BA in history, summa cum laude, from Providence College in May 2006 and a MA in history from George Mason University in May 2014.  He is currently the administrative office assistant and has been a member of the AHA staff since December 2008.  Matthew responds to general inquiries, assists with special projects, and helps the director of meetings and administration and the coordinator of committees and meetings.

    Allen edits the print and online versions of Perspectives on History, and supports the AHA's online and social media presence. Allen is completing his doctorate in US history at American University, received his MA from the Institute for English Studies at the University of London, and his BA from St. John's College in Santa Fe. He has worked as an in-house book editor, freelance nonfiction writer, adult basic education instructor/program manager, and as an adjunct lecturer in history.

    Dana oversees the membership department and development efforts of the AHA. She also provides support to the Executive Director for various managerial functions, including oversight of the AHA’s award, grant, and fellowship programs and coordinating media relations. Prior to joining the AHA staff in February 2013, Dana served as the assistant director at the Gilder Lehrman Center for the Study of Slavery, Resistance, and Abolition at Yale University, where she planned and directed public and academic programs and initiatives. Dana holds a BA in history from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and an MA in public history from American University.

  • Emily Swafford

    Emily Swafford joined the AHA in September 2014. As programs manager, she helps to direct the AHA’s many grant-funded undertakings. Her main project is to support the Career Diversity for Historians initiative. As part of staffing the Teaching Division, she also works on issues of graduate, undergraduate, and K-12 education. She earned a BA in history and American studies at the University of Virginia and her PhD in 20th-century US history at the University of Chicago. She is a historian of the US military, US foreign relations, and women’s and gender history. She is also an associate fellow at the German Historical Institute in Washington, DC.

    Liz started working at the AHA in 1991, as editorial assistant for the Directory of History Departments, Historical Organizations, and Historians. She is now responsible for the employment section online and in Perspectives on History; edits the Directory; and manages the annual meeting Job Center. Liz also maintains professional data in the AHA’s membership records and in the directories of doctoral programs and dissertations, helps update the website, proofreads most AHA publications, and consults on information technology issues in the office.

    Sharon serves as head of the Administration Department and as senior staff assistant to the Association's Professional Division, the Nominating Committee, and the Committee on Committees. In addition, she administers copyright matters for the Association and the Award for Scholarly Distinction, oversees the annual election of AHA officers, and serves on the in-house editorial board for Perspectives on History.
