Call for Proposals: The 2008 Meeting of the AHA
The 122nd annual meeting of the American Historical Association will be held January 36, 2008, in Washington, D.C. The Program Committee welcomes proposals from all members of the Association (academic and nonacademic), from affiliated societies, from historians working outside the United States, and from scholars in related disciplines. The committee wishes to encourage creativity and innovation, both with regard to intellectual content and presentation. In keeping with the new meeting guidelines adopted by the AHA’s Research Division in 2005, we invite sessions in a variety of formats, including poster sessions, sessions with precirculated papers, thematic workshops, roundtable discussions, and other departures from the traditional formal paper presentation. While we have selected a specific theme for the meeting, we welcome proposals on all topics and time periods, as befits the AHA’s role as the meeting ground for all historians.
The theme for the 2008 Annual Meeting is "Uneven Developments". We will particularly welcome sessions that break out of our customary circles of scholarly specialization, by crossing traditional chronological, geographic, and topical boundaries in their depiction of "uneven developments." We would like to reiterate, however, that proposals need not be related to the theme to receive serious consideration.
We welcome proposals that exploit the new flexibility in presentation formats to design sessions that reflect the meeting theme, particularly the call to rethink narrativity, disciplinarity, and global historical processes. At the same time, the program committee would like to encourage session organizers to be genuinely creative in their use of the new formats. In particular, we urge those organizing roundtables to make sure that the panels are interactive. The roundtable should provide short presentations that are perspectives on the same topic or issue, followed by extensive conversation with the audience.
Proposals must be submitted by midnight, Pacific Standard Time, on February 15, 2007. It will not be possible to submit proposals after that date. Proposals for panels or workshops must be complete (that is, include a list of all presenters). Individual proposals will be considered only for the "poster sessions," where historians present their research through visual materials set out on posters. Scholars wishing to find prospective co-panelists for putting together complete panels may wish to consult the H-Net discussion lists. Please consult the "Annual Meeting Guidelines" when preparing a proposal, and carefully follow the instructions for submitting a proposal. All persons appearing on the program must be members of the AHA, the exceptions being foreign scholars and scholars from other disciplines.
