The CGE Hits the Road
This spring, the AHA's Committee on Graduate Education (CGE) continues its effort to collect information about the state of graduate education; to register the concerns of individual historians, history departments, and graduate students; and to identify "promising practices" for improving graduate training in the years to come. An important part of this research phase is a "listening tour" that will take members of the committee and staff to various professional meetings around the country, where they will have a chance to hear from different constituencies within the profession. Open forums will be held—or have been held—at the following conferences in 2001:
- American Historical Association, Boston, January 5
- Society for History in the Federal Government, Washington, March 15
- National Council for Public History, Ottawa, April 20
- Organization of American Historians, Los Angeles, April 28
- Society for Historians of American Foreign Relations, Washington, June 16
- World History Association, Salt Lake City, June 28–July 1
- National Council for History Education, Washington, October 19–20; Community College Humanities Association, Portland, October 25–27
- National Council for Social Studies, Washington, November 16–18
If you're planning to attend any of the forthcoming conferences, please consider adding a CGE open forum to your schedule—we want to know what you think about graduate education.
Starting in the fall, the CGE will also conduct a series of site visits to individual history departments (probably 6 to 10 in all). We are looking for departments that have recently adopted innovative approaches to graduate education, are considering major changes to their graduate programs (or have recently undertaken such a change), or that offer exemplary models for any aspect of graduate training. At each institution, the committee will meet with faculty members, administrators, and graduate students. All AHA members are invited to nominate departments for these visits.
