The National Archives Offers Summer Workshop

Primarily Teaching: Original Documents and Classroom Strategies

The National Archives and Records Administration is offering Primarily Teaching: Original Documents and Classroom Strategies, a workshop designed to teach educators how to navigate National Archives resources and integrate them into their lesson plans. Workshops will be held at the following locations:

  • The National Archives in Washington, DC, June 21-30, 2006
    • This session is longer due to the volume and variety of records available in the DC Archives

  • The National Archives in Laguna Niguel, CA, July 10-14, 2006

  • The Dwight D. Eisenhower Library in Abilene, KS, July 17-21, 2006

The National Archives and Records Administration is responsible for the preservation of important government documents, including textual documents, photographs, films, computer tapes, and more. Some of the most famous Archives holdings include the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights.

The Primarily Teaching workshop will consist of lectures and demonstrations, but also of individual and group work that will introduce participants to the collections of the Archives. Each participant will choose a research topic, search for related materials in the Archives, and then a design a lesson plan around those materials. The workshop is geared for educators, but librarians, archivists, and those in related fields are also welcome to attend.

The cost of this workshop is $100, and graduate credit is available for an added cost. Space is limited; the DC session will accept 20 participants while the California and Kansas sessions are restricted to 10 participants each.
