AHA Responds to Hurricane Katrina

As an immediate response, and to facilitate communication and exchange of information at this critical juncture, the American Historical Association has joined with the Organization of American Historians and the Southern Historical Association to sponsor a message board for historians. The site, at http://www.oah.org/katrina/, will be open to all historians regardless of their fields of study and whether or not they are members of the sponsoring organizations.

AHA President James Sheehan has been in contact with historians in the area to see how the Association might be of immediate service. Current plans being considered include the provision of financial aid for historians from the flood-ravaged area who plan to use the Job Register at the January 5—8, 2006, AHA annual meeting in Philadelphia, and a special session at the meeting to explore the historical significance of the disaster.

Sheehan is currently setting up a small working group to gather ideas about how the Association might aid affected historians in the long run. See the dedicated AHA web page at http://www.historians.org/Katrina for updated information.
